چکیده

Charge neutralization of an In-FEEP thruster was demonstrated with three different electron sources by zeroing the floating potential of the thruster and neutralizer system. The three cathodes used in the investigation include a mixed metal thermionic cathode, a carbon nanotube field emission cathode, and a Spindt-type Mo field emission array cathode. The field emission cathodes significantly improved the power to thrust ratio of the thruster and neutralizer system. At 10 μN, the power-to-thrust ratio of the ion and electron source FEEP system decreased by 50% when the Spindt-type cathode was used. Measured plasma potential profiles were consistent with theoretical results obtained previously.

Operation of Spindt-Type, Carbon Nanotube Cold Cathodes in a Hall Effect Thruster Environment

Electric propulsion devices for space applications greatly reduce the propellant mass requirements on a spacecraft in comparison to chemical rockets. To date, gridded ion engines and Hall effect thrusters (HETs) rely on thermionic hollow cathodes to supply electrons for propellant ionization and ion beam neutralization. Hollow cathodes consume up to 10% of the total propellant used in low-power...

Design and parametric study of a radio-frequency cathode

Hollow cathodes have been commonly used as the electron source and neutralizer for ion thrusters and other electric propulsion devices (like Hall thrusters)till 1960s. They provide high electron current density by using low electric power and gas. However, they have some disadvantages: Hollow cathode’s lifetime is limited by the erosion and evaporation of the insert. Additionally, impurities in...

High-performance field-emission electron gun using a reticulated vitreous carbon cathode

Proof-of-concept experimental results stemming from beam simulations for a microfocus electron gun are presented. The simulations demonstrate the potential to produce 4 mA of current through a 40m-diameter spot, at an energy of 30 keV, emitted from a 1-mm-diameter cathode with low energy spread and high brightness. The experimental realization, scaled down for practicality, but consistent with ...

Development of Hollow Cathodes for Space Electric Propulsion at Sitael

Hollow cathodes are electron sources used for the gas ionization and the beam neutralization in both ion and Hall effect thrusters (HETs). A reduction of power and propellant consumption from the cathode is particularly needed in small satellite applications, where power and mass budgets are inherently limited. Concurrently, the interest in high-power HETs is increasingly fostered for a number ...

FEEP Thruster Performance at High Background Pressure

In FEEP thrusters, field ionization of cesium occurs on the liquid metal surface at the outlet of a 1 μm slit. The main concern with this ionization mechanism is the possible clogging of the emitter slit due to oxidation of cesium. As an alkali metal, cesium reacts very rapidly with water, forming cesium hydroxide (CsOH), and with oxygen, forming cesium oxide (Cs2O). These compounds melt or dec...
